One bad corner can change a Grand Tour, and today’s Tour de France proved it. We’re Michael and Adam from Cycling Men of Leisure, checking in with a daily leisure breakaway recap, and we start with the biggest lesson from the stage: when riders are descending at 50 to 60 miles per hour, the margin for error is basically nonexistent. We talk through the crashes, what likely causes them on technical descents, and why it’s a win for the whole race that nobody appears to be forced out.

Then we get into the meat of the stage analysis. With 166.6 km (103.5 miles), about 4,450 meters (14,600 feet) of climbing, and seven categorized climbs, this is one of the toughest mountain days of the first half of the Tour. We break down how the terrain shapes breakaway chances and why Tadej Pogacar’s near-summit attacks are so devastating late in the day. He takes the stage and stretches his overall lead to 3 minutes and 36 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard, tightening his grip on the general classification and the King of the Mountains fight.

We also zoom out for some Tour de France history on Bastille Day, including France’s shockingly long drought since 1985 despite leading all nations with 36 overall Tour wins. Before we sign off, we run the jerseys and standings: Pogacar in yellow and polka dots, Mads Pedersen in green, and a notable change in the white jersey. We share a quick community meetup note and where you can watch us now across YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify.

Welcome Back And Quick Setup

SPEAKER_03

All right, well, welcome back to the Cycling Men of Leisure's leisure breakaway, where we are spending time every day giving you an update of what happened at the Tour de France. I am Michael, and with me as usual is my good friend Adam. How are you doing, buddy?

SPEAKER_00

I'm doing good. I'm doing real good. I'm I'm happy to be here. I uh I just love that tune.

SPEAKER_03

It it it's catchy. Maybe a little too catchy. I found myself out in the other day in the yard doing yard work, and that just song would not get out of my head. I'm like, you gotta be kidding me. This is ridiculous, but that's okay.

SPEAKER_00

What have we

Crashes On Fast Descents

SPEAKER_00

got up today, sir?

SPEAKER_03

Well, uh, again, uh, I'm sitting at the corner of uh Spring and Center Street here in uh in Hot Springs, Arkansas, but I do have some information on the tour.

SPEAKER_02

All right.

SPEAKER_03

Um it uh today there's some crashes, and it really just showed us that uh how little margin of error there is when you are descending at you know 50 and 60 miles per hour down a down a mountain. So gotcha. Take a little bit about uh talk a little bit about today's distance, 166.6 kilometers. Uh for us Americans, that's 103.5 miles. The elevation gain was 4,450 meters, which is 14,600 feet. Uh they did hit seven category climbs, categorized climbs. It uh really made it one of the toughest days uh in the first half of the tour so far. Um Bastille Day, kind of uh looking at a French rider bringing home the uh the wind today, but that was not the case. Uh Toddy, Toddy struck again. He uh has this uncanny and wonderful ability on these these mountains, getting near the summit, and he just attacks. Before they get to the summit, he attacks. He caught the final survivor of a breakaway that had started earlier, rode clear, took the stage victory. Um he increased his overall lead over Vanego. Uh he's now at three minutes and 36 seconds. So he's uh putting a little bit more distance between him and the and the second uh the second place rider.

Stage Stats And Pogacar’s Attack

SPEAKER_03

Um I would say the biggest thing, there was several crashes. Uh I know that uh uh Pidcock uh crashed out on the corner, and uh Chris Harper also crashed out on the same corner. So um little little uh little dangerous today, but the good news is is no one uh had injuries bad enough that they had to had to leave the race or anything, and it doesn't appear that uh you know they had to worry about any concussion protocols or anything like that. So that's good. And uh, you know, Toddy also uh tightened up his grip on the King of the Mountains. So uh the other riders, if they want to uh to start pushing now, I think would be the time. So that's what we got.

SPEAKER_00

Awesome, awesome. Uh I have a couple of facts here. It says no French winner since Bernard in 1985, a 40-plus year drought in their own race. Um the uh the uh today the how do you how do you pronounce this? Uh S-E-I-X-A-S Podium was the closest that the French have gotten Bastille days today. So sexus? Sexus Saxis? I'm not sure. But uh I guess it guess it uh doesn't doesn't matter if I can't pronounce it, but we'll do the best that we can. But I have a breakdown for you of the 112 editions

Bastille Day And Tour Winner History

SPEAKER_00

uh of the Tour de France, and uh the most winningest country. You want to take a guess?

SPEAKER_03

The most winningest country. Well, I can assure you it's not America. I'm gonna say the most winningest country is in fact Holland.

SPEAKER_00

It is France, believe it. They have 36 wins, or what is 32.1% of all Tour de Frances uh has been won by the French. Um Belgium is next with half or 18 wins, and then Spain 12. America is down uh only three wins. Now there were more, but seven of them were stripped by your least favorite writer. So uh we'll just move on there. Um Colombia has one, Australia has one, Germany has one, Ireland has one, um, and then there have uh which I like the way that this categorized it says vacated, um, 1999 to 2005. Vacated, huh? Vacated, yes, sir. That's right, vacated.

SPEAKER_03

How many does England have, do you know?

SPEAKER_00

Uh let's see, uh I'll I'll read you the list. It's Great Britain has six, uh Luxembourg has five, Slovenia has four, USA three, Denmark three, Netherlands three, Switzerland two, and then uh France and Belgium together account for nearly half of the tours, yet neither has one in the modern era. Uh Belgium's last win uh was 1976. It's about 50 years ago, I'm gonna take a guess. Um uh only fifteen countries have ever produced a winner. And Toddy holds three point uh minute thirty-six lead from Slovenia, uh moving that would move it into five if he's able to complete uh two smallest nations on the list, um uh punction absurdly above their weight. Four riders, four riders share the record of five wins. Um, and Toddy would be one behind that after Paris if he's if he finishes. So uh really enjoying doing some of this research and looking into some of this stuff. I've never um I've been very truthful, I've never given uh given it even uh besides talking to you about the tour and watching it, uh, but really enjoying learning all kinds of interesting pieces and how I cannot pronounce hardly anything.

SPEAKER_03

So and and I'm going to guess that uh you said America's won three times, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

According to this that's gonna be the uh Le Monde, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, actually this is the the official answer that it gives is it says USA 3, which is 2.7, all Le Mond, uh Armstrong had seven stripped. It would have been 10 in the USA, but uh seven of them were were stripped. Um and but Sylvania, just to be clear, is Toddy, and it would be 2020, 21, 24, 25, and if he's successful, it would be 26.

SPEAKER_03

Cool. All right. Well, the one thing I did not do is I did not talk about jerseys today. So let's take a minute to just go over that. There's really not a lot of change, a little, not a lot. Uh Toddy's holding the yellow jersey. Uh uh Pederson is holding the green jersey. Toddy is holding the polka dot jersey. Now, a big change was, and I was surprised by this, is that Del Toro dropped out of the white jersey. He had held it for like a week. Uh ASO now holds the white jersey. Uh Lytle Trek is still the top team. And uh Carpaza got the most uh the most

Jersey Check And GC Gaps

SPEAKER_03

combative today. So um I just wanted to make sure we did that and didn't uh didn't miss out.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, uh Dor del Toro jumped on to seventh after stage 10. He's uh five minutes and eight seconds behind Toddy. So yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So he he had been uh uh strong, strong performer for that white jersey, but uh yeah, so we'll see. We'll see. Um again, there's only less than four minutes, three and a half minutes basically, between the the leader and uh the next person for the overall. So um it's still manageable at this point. Um if you start giving up a minute or two for the next few days, that's gonna become uh pretty much non a no a no-go thing as far as as pulling off a win over Toddy, but uh it's still it could still happen at this point, so we'll see.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I am uh um I am definitely excited. I I I look forward to tomorrow's stage. I uh I actually am uh gonna try to see if I can stream a little bit of it so I can uh pay a little bit more attention. Um but uh we did get away to Paul, who had a very funny uh emoji that he sent us, like kind of a picture of Batman and Robin. Uh Batman being Toddy and Robin being Deltoral, which I thought was was very humorous. Um and I also want to make sure that I mention the Ragbari meetup again. Um that is gonna be taking place. Let me get

Tomorrow Hype And Listener Shoutout

SPEAKER_00

my facts straight here. Uh it's by Keith Erickson, and he is going to um let's see here. I gotta get to my thing here. I apologize. I want to make sure I get the date and time. It's near the library. Uh let's see here. Yeah. Let's see here. Okay. It's a social meetup on Saturday, July 18th, 2:30 to 3 o'clock. Uh, that is the corner of Iowa Avenue and 7th Street. It's in front of the library. I apologize. In front of the library. So um he'll be there. Melanie will be there. I saw a lot of people who were liking and and commenting on the post. So I'm I'm really hoping that he can uh get some people there. Uh once again, I want to mention that if you are a Spotify fan, that you can now watch us. Uh if you'd like to watch our facial expressions, or maybe Michael laughing at me for not being able to pronounce something such as, oh, I don't know, bananas. No, just kidding. But uh you can see our facial expressions back and forth. You can now see us on three platforms. If you are a YouTube fan, and that was our original place, uh, Apple Podcast, uh, we were selected to be on there, which was really cool due to the uh listenership. Um, and then of course Spotify invited us as well. So now

Ragbrai Meetup And Where To Watch

SPEAKER_00

there are three platforms to watch us, and of course, you can listen to us everywhere else you were. So I just wanted to mention that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Now there's three platforms people can watch us. I mean, there's just there's no uh quality control, is there, on uh on who can get on these things. Pretty much.

SPEAKER_00

Well, all right, with that, uh anything else, sir?

SPEAKER_03

No, no. Uh we'll we'll uh talk about it again tomorrow.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's uh time for everyone's favorite song.
