Stage 11 of the Tour de France felt less like a “flat day” and more like a high-speed science experiment that got loose. We start in Vichy and finish in Nevers, then watch the whole race tip into history as the peloton clocks the fastest road stage the Tour has ever seen. With a strong tailwind and a relentless pace, the stage averages a staggering 31.6 mph, and suddenly every small detail matters: positioning, leadouts, timing, and which teams are willing to burn matches to control the finale.
The story we can’t stop talking about is the winner: a rider who’s dead last the day before after a crash and a hand injury, then shows up the next morning and pulls off a shock Tour de France stage win. We break down how the breakaway animated the day, why it still got reeled in with about six kilometers left, and how the finish turned into pure “chaos in motion.” We also unpack the Jasper Philipsen ruling that flips from relegation to reinstatement, and what that says about sprint interference, safety, and how messy the last 200 meters can get.
From there, we zoom out to the classifications and the numbers that actually shape the race: yellow jersey control, Mads Pedersen’s green jersey momentum via intermediate sprints, and the polka dot and white jersey gaps that are technically doable but brutally hard without a bad day from the leaders. We also talk GC time gaps, team points, and the reality that once you’re five to six minutes down, you’re usually betting on chaos, not form. If you love Tour de France stage breakdowns, sprint tactics, and jersey strategy, hit play, then subscribe, share the show with a riding buddy, and leave a quick review so more fans can find us.

All right, and we are back. Uh cycling men of leisure's leisure breakaway. Today, stage eleven, Tour de France, a record-breaking day at the tour. It became the fastest road stage in Tour de France history, ending in a high speed sprint to the line. We're gonna break it all down for you. I am Michael. With me as always is Adam. And I gotta say, Adam, welcome.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, buddy. Thank you, thank you. I've got all kinds of good facts and figures to help feed the uh help feed the stage 11 breakdown. So what you don't have,
Welcome Back And Stage Setup
SPEAKER_03I know you're uh enjoying the good, good central time Arkansas or Arkansas, as most people would say.
SPEAKER_00Arkansas, yes.
SPEAKER_03I have uh some some good stuff to help feed. So what I don't hear you say, I might be adding some some uh input today.
SPEAKER_00That would be fantastic. Um anybody watching, I apologize. He gets a little carried away with his de Brim pen and his de Brim uh sticky notes and things while the uh music while the music is playing. Oh boy. Hey, let me tell you, stage 11 did not disappoint. Uh started in Vichy, France, ended in Nevers, 161.3 kilometers uh for us Americans. That's 100.2 miles and uh crazy day. Um Schworn, we run we run Skebold, we runs Kabold, uh Javold, we runs Kabold. There we go. I apologize. I was just starting to get the French names down okay, and then they threw in a Scandinavian name here. Uh took the stage win.
Record Speed And Surprise Winner
SPEAKER_00And this is important to remember because yesterday, uh we run Skebold, was dead last. Today he was dead first. He was in a crash yesterday, had some hand injury going, got on his bike today, had to have a little medical attention uh on the with the uh mobile doctors, uh, and wound up taking the stage. And what's interesting is this came out of nowhere. No one was expecting him to win. And he's won one other race uh and there again they were not expecting him to win uh the other race either. So this guy is kind of like the I don't know, the cycling ninja just comes out of nowhere and boom, wins wins a uh stage of the tour de Tour de France. So uh fantastic job. Took him only three hours and ten minutes. His average speed was 31.6 miles per hour. That is 50.9 kilometers an hour. Again, the fastest road stage in Tour de France history.
SPEAKER_03That's correct. It was a 27-year record that he broke today. Uh, he broke it by 0.55 kilometers an hour.
SPEAKER_00That is impressive. Today's temperatures are a little bit nicer today. Uh only about 27 uh degrees Celsius. That's still 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Uh, they did uh get a little aid by with a uh strong tailwind, and that helped produce the record speeds. Um interesting day. A four-man breakaway took took off that included Ala Philippe, um, which that pretty much animated most of the stage. And they stayed out ahead of the Peloton until about six kilometers uh remained. Um there was a feed zone crash, which really affected uh three three players, um Ben O'Connor, uh Al uh uh Abel uh Balderstone and George Zimmerman. Um all three were able to continue, so that wasn't a problem. And then the finish was just chaos in motion, literally. Uh Jasper Phillipson uh initially was relegated for sprint interference. Uh him and the team uh said, wait a minute, uh that was reviewed by the race officials, and it his results were reinstated. All of this happened, but you know what? It really did not change the results. Uh Toddy safely finished the Peloton, he retained the yellow jersey. Uh Mods uh Pederson strengthened his hold on the green jersey after the this winning the uh intermediate sprints today. Uh good news is there's no riders that had to leave the race with injury or illness. So uh good good day on stage 11. Uh fun, exciting day. Um it was looking good for the breakaway there, but you know, they got they got pulled back and uh surprise victory.
SPEAKER_03Perfect, perfect. Well uh where do we stand jersey-wise?
SPEAKER_00Jersey-wise, not a whole lot has uh excuse me, not a whole lot has changed there. Toddy still can uh controls the yellow jersey. Uh Mons has the green jersey. Uh Toddy also controls the polka dot jersey currently. Uh White Jersey is still on the back of uh Iozo. The lead team is still Lytle Truck. And um the most aggressive and most combative today was uh uh Charming.
Jerseys Update After The Sprint
SPEAKER_00And um so not not uh not really anything changed in the jerseys today.
SPEAKER_03Cool, cool. Uh let me give you some stage 11 facts. Never's trivia. Here we go. Nevers. Um have they never hosted before today or have they hosted before today?
SPEAKER_00Uh uh they've hosted before.
SPEAKER_03Yes, one at a time. Once in 1952. There was a time trial run uh there the same year. Um uh let's see here. Uh Ferenzo Magnai, the same year that Fusto Copi won the overall tour. So that was in 1952. So uh there's some never trivia there. Um let's see here the jury flip-flop. You mentioned the Jasper
Nevers Trivia And Jury Reversal
SPEAKER_03Phillipson was regulated from third uh for a sprint infraction, then reinstated on appeal, two different verdicts on the same finish line in one afternoon. Um, and that's because Orange Gold, however you pronounce that, um he won by a chaotic uh bunch of sprint, um briefly regulated and then reinstated by the race jury. And it was the fastest road stage, as you said, in history. Uh want to give credit to the person that he broke the record from, which was Mario Capolini. Hopefully I'm pronouncing that correctly. I was 27-year-old uh um record. Record. Thank you so much. Sorry. Um you mentioned that Warren's Kehold uh had won one other. It was in 2025 at the omelet hit Lutherzbald, uh, which was also considered a very surprise result when he did it then. So this guy likes to do this uh uh multiple times. Like, you know what? You're not looking at me. I'm gonna win today.
SPEAKER_00So I'm telling you, he's a cycling ninja. No one sees him coming, and then out of the blue, pops up, boom, takes the win.
SPEAKER_03Uh here's some weird sprint physics. Um Olaf uh Kuji's own leadout man. Uh he accidentally jumped early. Uh and then uh then they used the slingshot, which made me think of how you and I do ragbride engage when we'd pass each other uh going.
SPEAKER_00So from from Talladega Knight.
SPEAKER_03Okay. There was a little slingshot uh today past him for the win. Um let's see here. Uh there was a uh Garvania, uh, if I'm pronouncing that correctly, he had a mechanical with only 10 kilometers to go, and he looked cooked for the sprint, and then his teammate paced him back, and he still finished in the pack. Um speed record footnote, the record breaker today, was also a flat bunch sprint with a tailwind when he did it um in uh 1999. Um and then that's about it for that. But what I also have for you, I've done extensive research here. You can see. All right, cool. Uh I've got some time trials. Now I'm not going to bore you with you know numbers. I don't expect people to listen to that. But what I would like to tell you is I have the top 20 as of stage 11 as finished today. And I thought it might be interesting just to give those who are paying attention uh and only following along the tour with us um some breakdowns. Um so Toddy has 39 hours, 25 minutes, and eight seconds. Um Adam Yates, who's in 20th place, just to give you an idea, is 18 minutes and 20 seconds 26
GC Time Gaps And Team Points
SPEAKER_03seconds behind. But the middle of the pack, which I thought was really interesting, depending on what you consider the middle, either Tom Pidcock at six minutes, and then the next one behind him is Lenny Martinez at eleven minutes and forty-nine seconds. But um, so I thought that was kind of interesting. And then the top three, I thought I would just tell you, is Toddy Vandegaard and Everpool. Um he's ahead, like as you mentioned, three three minutes and thirty-six seconds. You said that. Um, but then behind him is four minutes and six seconds is Evanpool. So um kind of interesting there. Point wise, uh as you mentioned, the Latatrek, uh, they're leading everything with 317 points. Um and then we do have a close call with the NSN cycling team, um and and the uh Al Pekin Premier Tech. I mean, they're only they're only behind 20-something points. So tell me, as a guy who's this is my first year paying attention, is 20 points hard to overcome? 20 to 30 points?
SPEAKER_00I believe the team's name is Alperm, but um just to correct. 20 points on the team, actually, that is that is doable. Uh I mean it is. Lytle Truck is has been up there, but uh really 20 points for the team, you could you could easily you could easily make that up and and come back from that. I don't really know, and I don't really see anybody doing that because based upon this this first week, uh I guess we're almost halfway through now. But uh it is doable. Now I will say that the guys uh I think he's talked about a Big Cock being like you know six minutes back. Um once you're once you're hitting the five, six minutes back thing, you're you pretty much are are out of it at this point unless catastrophe happens. So we'll see.
SPEAKER_03So uh tell me about the mountain classification because as you mentioned, I don't want to be repetitive, but you said Toddy had he he you know keeps the king of the mountain jersey. Um he's got 42 points currently, and then uh Vendegaard is is wearing it uh right now um because Toddy's wearing the yellow jersey, but he's got 27 points, and so difference of what 15 points. Is that uh is that hard to hard to climb that hill?
SPEAKER_00Uh 15 points uh is certainly doable. You can certainly uh make up those 15 points, but I caveat that by saying it's gonna be hard to it's easy to make up those
Mountains And White Jersey Math
SPEAKER_0015 points if you're not racing against Toddy.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Uh it's it's gonna be hard. If there was other somebody else in there uh who wasn't leading the the race, uh yeah, you could do it, but the way Toddy's writing and that type of thing, I you're uh I don't see he would have to have a couple of really bad days for uh Vindigo to be able to catch that up. It's doable, but under the current circumstances, I don't think it's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Let me say that.
SPEAKER_03All right. Uh the young writer classification, the white jersey. Um I like to keep calling him Juan F. Soto. Um, but Juan is leading at 39 hours, 29 minutes, and 30 seconds. Uh we have uh Paul and Del Toro. Um, but let's talk about number number two. He's 13 minutes behind on the young rider classification. So to catch Juan Um 13 minutes, if all things stay the same. 13 minutes is hard to hard to make up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, 13 minutes is uh that's a monster, a monster amount to make up. Uh again, that the only way someone else is gonna take that is if there's some catastrophic problem, one has to drop out, uh, he's in a big you know crash or something where it uh he falls out of the Peloton for something or has a has an injure uh has an illness and you know isn't able to ride ride well. So I I'll make the prediction that he's pretty much got it sewed up.
SPEAKER_03Cool, cool. Well, this is gonna be interesting. I'm I'm highly enjoying this. I have a couple of announcements. Um, first announcement I'd like to make is wow, you and I just crossed a major threshold. We hit one hundred thousand. That's correct. That number is correct. 100,000 downloads with the podcast, and that's absolutely uh just awesome. Just awesome. Wow.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, they the the numbers have been just booking in uh the last couple of weeks. So uh that's awesome. Congratulations, buddy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you too. Uh I also want to make sure I mention our Ragbury social meetup. Um, I say
100K Downloads And RAGBRAI Meetup
SPEAKER_03our because there are people honoring us, but to be fair, it is actually it is Keith. Um, Keith Erickson, our our good member and teammate uh DeBrimware. We appreciate him being uh DeBrimware. Safety is number one for sure. But the most important thing is on Saturday, July 18th, between 2 30 and 3 o'clock, he is gonna be hosting a cycling man of leisure, cycling women of leisure uh get together, uh just kind of like uh meet other team members if you're out in Iowa. Um, and that's gonna be at the corner of Iowa Avenue and 7th Street in front of the library. So uh look for a guy with a good looking de Brim on, right, buddy?
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, just just look for a guy. Um and I will say, if you you want to uh become a member of the community or just meet other riders, great opportunity to come out there. Um these rides are always better, and I've said this a million times. If you make friends along the way and get to know people, this would be a great way to uh to get to meet some people right at the beginning of the ride, and uh it it'll make it way more fulfilling, I guarantee it.
SPEAKER_03I mean, you and I met the mayor.
SPEAKER_00We we did, the mayor of Ragbry, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Mayor of Ragbri. Uh want to mention our friend Andrew Thrill. Uh Phil, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Um uh he's coming from Dubuque and he's gonna do his best to get there, Keith. So, Keith, I know you and Melanie are traveling and listening to us. Uh uh, but uh there is a good good friend of ours, uh long distance rider, done a lot of cool things. So uh he will fit right in the category there. But um uh again, if you have not heard, we are on three platforms uh in video, uh although last night we had a little snafu with your video. But guess what, buddy? I've seen you the whole time, so I think you're gonna be back in three. So uh hey, listen, uh we we learn a lot when we're on the road and doing things differently.
SPEAKER_00Oh, we do.
SPEAKER_03Uh appreciate you being here. Uh appreciate all the comments about the song. Oh gosh, you know, people are my wife is even saying that she's listening to it and she uh she uh wants to know, you know, maybe I should put that as a ringtone. And she said, So I appreciate all of you sticking around for the song. Uh, before I give them the beautiful tunes, sir, anything else?
SPEAKER_00No, but I will say uh today was a beautiful day for a ride here in Hot Springs.
SPEAKER_03Well, and I was a beautiful day to play some golf. So uh we we had some good time.
SPEAKER_00So uh it was a beautiful day for leisure.
SPEAKER_03How about that? I love it. I love it. All right, well, good to see you, sir. And uh tomorrow, guys, stage 12. Stage 12. Until then.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the leisure breakup. Listen to the
